Kelford was drawn before it was built

In March 1890 a surveyor named C.H. Haargrove ran lines across sixty-five acres of Bertie County farmland and set out streets and lots for a town that did not exist yet. Two railroads crossed nearby. The town took its name from a house that had burned five years earlier. It was incorporated in 1892.
